Terms of Service

Welcome to Dash of Luz! These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Dash of Luz website and application (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Dash of Luz, you confirm that you are at least 18 years of age and that you agree to comply with and be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you are using the Service on behalf of a household or organization, you represent that you have the authority to bind them to these Terms.

2. Account Registration

To use Dash of Luz, you must create an account with a valid email address and a secure password. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Please notify us immediately at support@dashofluz.com if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.

3. Subscription Plans and Billing

Dash of Luz offers the following plans:

  • Free — single-user plan; up to 25 recipes, 75 pantry items, 20 meal plans per month, 5 AI suggestions per month, and 3 AI recipe scans (lifetime).
  • Plus ($9.99/mo) — single-user plan; unlimited recipes, pantry items, and meal plans; 30 AI recipe scans per month; 60 AI suggestions per month.
  • Family ($14.99/mo) — shared household workspace for up to 6 members via invite; shared household recipe collection, pantry, shopping list, and meal calendar; 60 AI recipe scans per month (shared across household); 120 AI suggestions per month (shared across household).

Family Plan Responsibilities

The Family plan is managed by a single household owner (the account holder who subscribes to the Family plan). The household owner is responsible for inviting and removing household members, for the household environment overall, and for all payment obligations under the Family plan. Content added to the shared household workspace — including recipes, pantry items, meal plans, and shopping lists — is visible to all household members. Each household member is responsible for their own conduct within the Service. The household owner may remove members at any time. If the household owner deletes their account without transferring ownership, the household is dissolved and all members revert to individual Free accounts (see Section 10).

Recurring Billing

Paid subscriptions are billed monthly through Stripe and automatically renew each billing cycle. By subscribing, you authorize Dash of Luz to charge your selected payment method on a recurring basis until you cancel.

Downgrades

You may downgrade your plan at any time (for example, from Family to Plus). Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing period — you will retain access to your current plan's features until then. If you downgrade from the Family plan, household-sharing features remain available to all household members until the downgrade takes effect. Once the downgrade takes effect, household sharing is disabled and affected members revert to individual Free accounts.

Cancellation

You may cancel your paid subscription at any time from your account settings. After cancellation, you will retain access to paid features through the end of your current billing period. Once that period ends, your plan will revert to Free.

No Refunds

Subscription fees are generally non-refundable. Refunds will only be issued where required by applicable law.

Data on Downgrade or Cancellation

Downgrading or canceling your subscription does not delete your data. Your recipes, meal plans, pantry items, and other content will persist, but access to certain features may be restricted based on Free plan limits.

Limit Changes

We may adjust plan limits from time to time. If we make material changes to the limits of your current plan, we will provide reasonable advance notice.

4. User Content

You retain ownership of all content you create, upload, or store on Dash of Luz, including recipes, meal plans, photos, and notes ("User Content"). By using the Service, you grant Dash of Luz a limited, non-exclusive license to use, store, process, and display your User Content solely for the purpose of providing and improving the Service.

You are responsible for ensuring that your User Content does not violate any third-party rights, including copyright. If you import a recipe from an external source, you are responsible for complying with any applicable terms of that source. On the Family plan, User Content (recipes, pantry items, meal plans, and shopping lists) is shared across the household and visible to all household members.

Imported recipes. When you import a recipe from an external URL or photo, you are responsible for having the right to use that content. Imported recipes may be subject to third-party copyright. Dash of Luz does not claim ownership of, verify the copyright status of, or confirm rights to imported material. You bear responsibility for proper attribution where applicable.

AI-generated content. Recipes or modifications generated by AI features are based on your inputs and general culinary knowledge. They are provided to you for personal use. You are responsible for reviewing AI-generated content before use, including verifying accuracy, safety, and suitability.

No monitoring obligation. Dash of Luz does not actively monitor User Content but reserves the right to remove content that violates these Terms.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use automated scripts, bots, or scrapers to access or extract data from the Service.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other users' accounts, our servers, or our infrastructure.
  • Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable laws.
  • Upload content that is harmful, abusive, defamatory, or infringes on the rights of others.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the Service.

6. AI-Powered Features

Dash of Luz uses artificial intelligence to provide features such as recipe suggestions, ingredient analysis, recipe scanning, and smart meal planning. While we strive to make these features helpful and accurate, please be aware of the following:

  • AI-generated suggestions are informational only and do not constitute medical, nutritional, or dietary advice.
  • AI may produce inaccurate ingredient lists, measurements, or instructions. Always review recipes and suggestions before cooking.
  • AI substitution suggestions may not account for allergies, intolerances, or dietary restrictions. You must verify all substitutions yourself.
  • Food safety is your responsibility. AI does not assess food safety, cooking temperatures, allergen cross-contamination, or spoilage.
  • AI outputs may vary and are not guaranteed to be consistent or reproducible.
  • Dash of Luz is not liable for adverse reactions, illness, or injury resulting from reliance on AI-generated content.
  • AI features are not a substitute for professional medical or nutritional advice from a qualified healthcare provider. If you have specific dietary needs or health conditions, consult a qualified professional.

7. Intellectual Property

The Dash of Luz name, logo, visual design, and underlying software are the property of Dash of Luz and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works based on our software or branding without prior written permission.

8. Limitation of Liability

The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without warranties of any kind, express or implied.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Dash of Luz and its owners, employees, and affiliates shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the Service. This includes, without limitation, damages for loss of data, loss of profits, or interruption of service.

Our total liability for any claim related to the Service shall not exceed the amount you paid to Dash of Luz in the twelve months preceding the claim.

9. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Dash of Luz and its owners, employees, and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorney's fees) arising out of or in any way connected with:

  • Your misuse of the Service.
  • User Content you submit that infringes or violates third-party rights.
  • Your violation of these Terms.
  • Your unlawful conduct in connection with the Service.

10. Termination

You may delete your account at any time through your account settings. When you delete your account, we delete your personal data, recipes, meal plans, pantry items, and other User Content from our active systems.

Residual copies may briefly persist in automated system backups but are not individually accessible and are overwritten in the normal course of backup rotation.

If you are a household owner on the Family plan, you will be asked to either transfer household ownership to another member or confirm deletion of the household and all shared data — including shared recipes, pantry items, meal plans, and shopping lists — before your account can be deleted. Other household members retain their own individual accounts and personal data but lose access to the dissolved household and revert to individual Free accounts.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms or engage in conduct that we reasonably believe is harmful to other users, the Service, or Dash of Luz. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you before or at the time of suspension, except where immediate action is necessary.

11. Modifications to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will provide notice through the app or by email at least 14 days before the new Terms take effect. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

12. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Illinois, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Illinois. The Service is operated from and primarily intended for users in the United States.
